There are three main types of boiler: conventional, combination and condensing. A conventional boiler is a good choice for large families who need plenty of hot water and are typically between 75-88 per cent efficient. If you can't wait for water to be heated in the conventional way, then combination boilers heat water direct from the mains, eliminating the need for cylinder in the airing cupboard and tank in the loft. As no energy is wasted in keeping stored water heated energy efficiency can be as high as 90 per cent. At the top end of the market, both in terms of price and efficiency is the condensing boiler. These use an extra heat exchanger to recover and recycle more of the heat that would be wasted by a conventional boiler an typically give an energy efficiency output of between 90-95 per cent. A further development in this market is the 'condensing-combi' boiler, which combines the efficiency o the condensing boiler with the performance of the combination boiler.

The size of your boiler is dictated by the output you require. This is measured in terms of radiators and hot water demand. It has been common in the past to oversize boilers to make sure the boiler would heat your house adequately.
Further consideration needs to be given too where the new and replacement boiler is going to be positioned. The most important consideration is the ventilation and flueing. Ventilation requirements depend on several factors, is the boiler open flued or room sealed, in a compartment or in the garage? Different installations require different amounts of ventilation. It is essential that the correct ventilation is provided.
The flue from a boiler and especially its termination are also important considerations. Many restrictions apply as to exactly where a flue can terminate.
